No, it is not essential to rent a car to enjoy Lanzarote, but it does highly recommended if you want to explore the island in depth and move around freely.
Lanzarote is a relatively small island (about 60 km long), but many of its inhabitants are special corners are scattered different areas, and direct public transport is not always available.
Situations in which yes it is in your best interest to hire a car:
- You want to make excursions at your own pace (Timanfaya, La Geria, northern beaches...).
- Travelling as a couple, family or group and looking for comfort?
- You are staying outside the main tourist areas

Lanzarote has a network of guaguas (buses) operated by IntercityBus. You can travel between tourist areas, the airport and major towns. However:

- Less service in the evening and at weekends.
