One of the most frequent questions among visitors to the island is: Is it necessary to rent a car in Lanzarote? In this article we explain when it is advisable, what alternatives exist and what type of trip is best suited to each option. From Salitre House we give you our opinion as local hosts.

Is it essential to rent a car in Lanzarote?

No, it is not essential to rent a car to enjoy Lanzarote, but it does highly recommended if you want to explore the island in depth and move around freely.

Lanzarote is a relatively small island (about 60 km long), but many of its inhabitants are special corners are scattered different areas, and direct public transport is not always available.

Situations in which yes it is in your best interest to hire a car:

  • You want to make excursions at your own pace (Timanfaya, La Geria, northern beaches...).
  • Travelling as a couple, family or group and looking for comfort?
  • You are staying outside the main tourist areas

Situations in which no is so necessary:

  • You are going to stay alone in an area like Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca.
  • Your trip is short and you have organised transfers
  • You don't mind using taxis, buses or organised tours.

???? How does public transport work in Lanzarote?

Lanzarote has a network of guaguas (buses) operated by IntercityBus. You can travel between tourist areas, the airport and major towns. However:

  • Frequencies are not very high
  • The routes do not cover rural or natural areas well (such as Papagayo or Ermita de Las Nieves).
  • Less service in the evening and at weekends.

It is a good option if you are staying in Puerto del Carmen and want to move around nearby areas without haste.

What about taxis or private transfers?

The taxis on Lanzarote are safe and regulated. You can use them for airport transfers, getting around the area or even for private excursions.

There are also private transfers for groups or travellers without a car, especially between the airport and tourist accommodation.

Indicative prices:

  • Airport → Puerto del Carmen: 15-20 €.
  • Puerto del Carmen → Playa Blanca: 35-45 €.

????️ How is the experience with a car in Lanzarote?

Very good. Roads are well surfaced, traffic is minimal and parking is usually easy, especially outside of tourist areas.

In addition, driving gives you access to secret corners as:

  • Natural pools of Punta Mujeres
  • Viewpoint of Haría
  • Wineries of La Geria
  • Playas del Papagayo (unpaved track required)

Petrol is cheaper than on the mainland and distances are short, so you won't spend much.

Conclusion: To rent a car in Lanzarote or not?

It depends on the type of trip you are planning, but our recommendation as a host of Salitre House is clear:

If you want to discover the real Lanzarote, a car will give you the freedom and many more options to enjoy the island at your own pace.

But if you prefer to rest, stay close to the sea and move only between tourist areas, you can do without it without any problem.
